Why the Olympic Spirit Matters in Business
For the past two weeks, my family and I have been captivated watching the XXV Winter Olympic Games in Milano Cortina, Italy. From skiing and hockey to figure skating, curling, bobsled and everything in between, I’ve been in awe of the athleticism, discipline, and commitment on display.
Few events unite the world the way the Olympics do. Watching athletes represent their countries with pride reminds me how powerful a shared purpose can be. As an American, I feel an incredible sense of pride seeing our athletes compete on the world stage and represent our country with integrity and heart. Equally, as a Minnesotan I’m proud of the 24 athletes with ties to the North Star State - second to only Colorado.
As I reflect on the Olympic spirit, I am struck by how much crossover there is between the traits of an Olympic athlete and the qualities that drive success in the workplace.
· Collaboration: Success is never a solo act; team-work is essential – whether it’s a relay team, coaching staff, or cross-functional business team working towards a common goal.
· Time Management. Every second counts at the Olympics level, just as it does when deadlines, priorities, and limited resources compete for attention.
· Mental Toughness: Athletes know adversity is inevitable. Injuries, losses, and setbacks require mental toughness to stay focused. This is the same in business, where resilience often determines long-term success.
· Leadership: Whether on the ice, the slopes, or in the boardroom, leaders set the tone, inspire trust, and elevate everyone around them.
· Work ethic. Every athlete, whether on and off the podium, represents an extraordinary work ethic, countless decisions under pressure, and a relentless commitment to goal setting.
· Sacrifice. Athletes put their personal goals aside for the benefit of the team and the mission. That mindset is just as powerful in business as it is in sport.
· Mutual Respect. Some of the most inspiring moments aren’t the medals, but the respect and friendships formed along the way – competitors cheering for one another whether in victory or defeat. In business, we compete, but how we treat each other along the journey defines our culture and character.
· Efforts over Outcomes. The Olympics remind us that success isn’t always about standing on the podium. It’s about perseverance and showing up for your team – especially in times of defeat. The same mindset builds trust and drives results in the workplace.
The Olympics remind us that greatness isn’t achieved alone – and in business, the strongest teams are the ones that lift each other up, whether celebrating a victory or learning from a loss.
