Happy Birthday America: 250 years of Freedom, Innovation, and Place
As I reflect on our nation’s 250th birthday, I’m in awe of what America has become in such a relatively short period of time.
In my travels overseas, I’ve sat in churches, pubs, and public spaces that have stood for more than 1,000 years. Yet when I travel across the United States, I’m equally amazed - not by age, but by what has been built in just 250 years.
From the Rocky Mountains to the Great Plains, from vibrant downtowns to small towns and neighborhoods, the scale, diversity, infrastructure, and opportunity of this country remain extraordinary.
One of the things that makes America unique is its abundance of space and possibility. Nearly 40% of the nation is public land, providing access to parks, forests, trails, and open spaces that shape our quality of life. The United States is also home to more than 3,000 counties and nearly 20,000 incorporated places - each with its own story, character, and opportunity for growth.
As we look to the next 250 years, I’m excited by the innovation that will shape where we live, work, and connect. Yet I also hope we continue to preserve the landscapes, open spaces, and freedoms that have always defined the American experience.
The future of our country will not be built by technology or infrastructure alone. It will be built by people, communities, and the places that bring them together.
Wishing you and your families a safe, joyful, and recharging 4th of July weekend. May we celebrate the freedoms we enjoy, appreciate the communities we call home, and look ahead with optimism to the next chapter of America’s story.
Happy Independence Day!
